Welcome to Future Oak
FUTURE OAK is a pioneering project investigating the role of beneficial microbes in fighting diseases that affect the Britain’s native oak trees. In particular, Acute Oak Decline (AOD) has been identified as a growing threat to highly valued oak populations, especially in southern and central England.
Through an investigation of the oak’s microbiome – the distinct ecosystem of bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms inhabiting the roots, stem and leaves – we will explore the role of these microorganisms in tree health, aiming to determine whether there are microorganisms that can protect trees from disease, and whether we can use them as a natural biocontrol treatment that may help prevent the further spread of AOD.
We will also engage with forest managers and stakeholders to explore their understandings of and attitude towards the microbiome in oak health and management.
